Minutes for IFB Meeting, July 26, 2006, Station 25
The meeting of the Indianapolis Fire Buffs was called to order
at 1934 on July 26,
2006, by President Rodger Birchfield. Thirteen members were
present; three
members were excused. Guest: Brett Jackson was present for his
third meeting.
A moment of silence was observed to honor deceased members and
firefighters.
The Pledge of Allegiance followed.
A motion to approve the minutes of the June 2006 meeting, as
corrected, was
made by David Chambers. The motion was approved
unanimously.
A motion to approve the Treasurer’s report for June 2006 was
made by Jerry
Traub. The motion was approved unanimously.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
MUSEUM: no report
APPARATUS: Dennis Chambers reported status quo.
MEMBERSHIP: An application for Associate Member status was
received from Ron
Huff, the Region 8 IFBA Vice President. Brett Jackson was
present for his third
meeting, and having tendered his application for Active Member
status, his
attendance made him eligible for membership consideration. A
motion to accept
Brett Jackson as an Active Member was made by Jim Williamson.
The motion was
approved. Membership ID cards were discussed. The matter was
tabled until
August to allow Rodger Birchfield time to research.
CANTEEN: The club responded to a 3rd Alarm fire
at 2928 S. Madison Ave. on July
10. The response was made by Jim Williamson, Jerry Traub, Matt
Woods, and Bob
Woods. The canteen wouldn’t start (dead battery, so the response
was made in Jim
Williamson’s truck. Approximately 75 people were served over two
hours.
Bert Williams and Major Mark Litherland responded in the small
canteen to the
lumber yard fire in Columbus, IN on July 20. They were on the
scene for
approximately five hours, serving water and food items to about
50 people.
Williams reported that the Columbus FD does not have a rehab
unit, so they were
very appreciative of the support.
Bert Williams reported that Mark Burke was presently in St.
Louis, MO with the
small canteen supporting relief efforts due to high temperatures
and prolonged
power outages.
COMMUNICATIONS: no report
STATION 12: The roof is still covered with a tarp, and the
needed roof repairs are
pending. Ron Cunningham reported there are two broken
windows.
OLD BUSINESS: Convention Ad Book – Jerry Traub reported there
was a typo for
the Seattle convention ad book that showed a deadline of 7/15.
The actual date
was 6/15. Our ad was returned, and a refund check is being
processed.
Jerry Traub presented the membership with a report of the IFBA
Annual
Convention. Please see addendum.
Dues report: matter tabled. The meeting had not yet taken
place.
NEW BUSINESS: Bert Williams handed out copies of “When the Winds
Died Down”
booklet that described Salvation Army efforts in Louisiana and
other areas as a
result of last years hurricanes. He also announced there would
be disaster training
scheduled during October, and the Fire Buffs will be invited to
that training.
Williams discussed the SA’s disaster plans for the state as well
as the staging of
disaster supplies and equipment.
Brett Jackson advised that Christopher, the creator of
Indianafiretrucks.com, wants
to create a historical section for the Indianapolis Fire
Department and is looking for
information and pictures. Rodger Birchfield is going to contact
him.
IFB officers are planning to meet with the new Public Safety
Director, Earl Morgan,
with Chief Greeson. The date has now been set for Tuesday,
August 29.
Steve Brand (Station 19) is going to assist the Club with the
fixing of a broken wall
at Station 12. Thanks Steve!

ADDENDUM
REPORT OF IFBA NATIONAL CONVENTION
Submitted by Jerry Traub
Jim Williamson (delegate) and Jerry Traub (alternate) attended
this meeting on behalf of
IFB. Arrived Tuesday evening at Red Lion Hotel, 5th Ave, Seattle.
Wednesday morning
opening session was held. This was followed by the Executive
Board meeting where Jim
and Jerry reported on the first edition and future of TURN OUT
magazine, now produced
by the Indy Publishing Group. Comments were positive. One new
club presented from
Waukesha, WI for membership. All old business matters were
cleared from the agenda.
Jim and Jerry can provide specifics. New business included
discussion of possible
Internet on-line Spring business meeting rather than visit to
convention city. This will not
be changed now. Possible presidential appointment of Region 4
vice-president, since no
candidate was provided from region. Tabled to business meeting
Friday. Next Spring
board meeting March 24, 2007, Cambridge (Boston) MA. Future
conventions were
previewed that evening at Cambridge in 2007 and Racine, WI in
2008.
Thursday was an all-day bus trip and lunch to Washington state
fire training academy,
North Bend.
Friday was delegates’ meeting. All items from the Exec board
meeting were resolved or
referred to committee for further study. Slate of candidates for
new officers approved.
Afternoon had workshops and/or Boeing airplane plant tour.
Friday evening was Seattle
Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox baseball game at SAFECO Field for
those who bought
tickets, or visits to stations and fire dispatch.
Saturday was a trip to Seattle FD training center apparatus
displays and demonstrations.
Driest training center in the U.S.
Saturday evening banquet and closing ceremonies, as new officers
and regional vicepresidents
were sworn in. Hospitality Room was open for the last time.
Activities were
interesting and Seattle an exciting major metropolitan
area.
(Indianapolis attendees were complimented repeatedly by those
who had been here in
2005 about the fine job done and good times had by all.)
